Activewear for Pilates & Gyrotonic
I've spent years working at a desk , and since relocating to Shanghai over a year ago, something shifted. I found myself drawn to two practices I'd never explored before: Pilates and Gyrotonic (禅柔). Both have quietly changed the way I inhabit my own body.
These disciplines have taught me to regulate my breathing, sharpen my focus, and genuinely tune in to what's happening inside — moment to moment, movement to movement. It's a conversation I didn't know I'd been missing.
"It's remarkable how much your wardrobe evolves alongside your lifestyle. Even as a beginner, I found myself thinking about how to dress the movement."
Two disciplines, one philosophy
Before we talk clothes, a quick introduction to these two practices. Understanding what your body is doing shapes everything about how you dress for it.
Top from Lorna Jane; Leggings from Lorna Jane
Pilates
A low-impact exercise system focused on core strength, postural alignment, and controlled, intentional movement. Every rep demands body awareness. Fitted activewear, such as leggings, a supportive sports bra, feels both practical and right.
Gyrotonic
A gentler, flowing movement practice that blends deep stretching, conscious breathing, and full-body relaxation. Fluid, meditative, and wonderfully accessible are in more ways than one.
Building a wardrobe for movement
My activewear journey started long before Shanghai. During my years living in Australia, I fell in love with Lorna Jane and picked up quite a few of their sports bras. Their fit and quality kept me coming back. Some of those pieces have followed me all the way to China, still going strong.
For the rest of my kit, H&M's sport line has been a genuine discovery. Their tie-front tops, in particular, hit a sweet spot: great value, endlessly versatile, and easy to pair with almost anything.
What each practice asks of your outfit
Pilates — Close to the Body
Because Pilates is precision-based, fitted clothing helps you (and your instructor) see exactly what your body is doing. Leggings and a supportive sports bra are the practical standard.
Gyrotonic — Beautifully Uncomplicated
One of Gyrotonic's quiet charms is how low-barrier the dress code is, especially for the lower body. You don't need dedicated yoga pants at all — a pair of simple, loose-fitting trousers works perfectly. The movement is soft; your clothes can be too.
Versatility Above All
Both practices reward pieces you can move between effortlessly — from studio to street, from morning class to an afternoon café. Neutral tones, simple cuts, and quality fabrics go a long way.
