How to Style a Jumper in Spring — 3 Ways to Wear It

A well-made jumper has a way of giving you that effortless old-money ease without even trying.

Spring weather is notoriously unreliable, and your wardrobe needs pieces that can keep up. A cardigan feels too soft, a trench too structured, a blazer too deliberate, and then there's the jumper, the one I always reach for first. It's effortless, unfussy, and anything but boring.

Travel essential

The one thing I always pack

Every time I'm debating on what to bring on a trip, the jumper goes in first. The logic is simple:

Cold at the destination? Wear it and get instant warmth without the bulk;

Warmer than expected? Drape it over your shoulders or tie it at the waist and then you look intentional rather than underprepared;

A quality wool or cashmere jumper doesn't crease, folds flat, and barely takes up space

One jumper can handle about 80% of situations on any trip.

Playful · Preppy · Polished

What makes it interesting is the contrast: a jumper reads casual and relaxed on its own, yet the right pairing transforms it entirely. Change the bottom half or add an unexpected layer underneath, and suddenly you have something playful, preppy, and quietly polished.

Three ways to wear it

Same jumper, three moods

Let’s decode the styling formulas behind these three looks.

Playful

Mini skirt + chunky trainers or sneakers

Preppy

Collar peeking out at the neck, paired with plaid shorts or a pleated skirt

Polished

The polished look deserves a little more attention

Formula A

Draped over a maxi dress

Rest the jumper across your shoulders without putting it on. No colour rules — a hot pink jumper against a long dress adds a sense of movement that feels entirely unplanned.

Formula B

Worn over a maxi dress

Pull the jumper fully on over the dress. Stick to grey or soft neutrals and the contrast of the skirt spilling out below creates effortless layered depth.

My two workhorses

The constants in my wardrobe

One is grey knit jumper from Polo Ralph Lauren.

The ultimate workhorse. Relaxed but substantial that works over jeans, under a coat, and with maxi dresses.

The other one is hot pink jumper from Jacquemus.

The statement piece. That colour does all the talking.

The two pieces complement each other perfectly. The grey is my safe card and the hot pink is my statement card. One neutral, one bold: together they cover nearly every occasion I can think of.
